The Whitney Museum was established in 1930 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a sculptor and art patron. She founded the museum to allow American artists to showcase their work, as many were not given opportunities in traditional galleries and museums. Since then, the Whitney has become a leading institution in the art world, with a collection of over 25,000 works by over 3,500 artists.
